Tamping is the process of compacting the coffee powder in the sieve to create a firm and even coffee puck with a smooth and level surface.
Proper tamping prevents channeling and ensures even extraction of all coffee grounds. This releases all the aromatic compounds from the coffee.
This is a pressure-regulated tamper with a preset pressure of approximately 14 kg. When the preset pressure is reached, a mechanical signal sounds as feedback, and the tamper releases the pressure. After several tests, MHW 3Bomber determined that at a constant pressure of approximately 14 kg, the extraction rate remains virtually identical regardless of the amount of coffee grounds used or the extraction time. The outer ring, which rests flat against the portafilter, ensures that the tamper is always pressed vertically downwards. Simply place the tamper on the portafilter and press down; the spring then returns the base to its upward position.
This tamper fits perfectly on 58 mm portafilters.
Through repeated testing, MHW 3Bomber has determined that 58.5 mm is the perfect size for leveling tools and tampers. These fit precisely into 58 mm portafilters and reduce coffee grounds waste.
The tamper has an ergonomic handle and fits comfortably in the hand. Furthermore, the base features concentric grooves, which ensure more coffee grounds come into contact with the water, resulting in better extraction.
The entire tamper is made from high-quality materials. The handle is made of solid walnut wood, the middle section is made of an aluminum alloy, and the base and spring are made of stainless steel (SUS304).
The entire tamper can be disassembled and is therefore easy to clean.
